Review of Planes (2013) by Blair K — 21 Mar 2015

I was able to see this movie before it came out and I myself had a mixed response. Planes directed by Klay Hall is a pretty kid oriented underdog story planes as the title says so itself.

Planes follows Dusty Crophopper (Dane Cook) who himself is a dusty crop duster who just wants to race. The thing is he wasn't built for racing which is where the underdog plot point comes in. With the help of Dusty's friend Chug (Brad Garrett) they sorta find a way. Since Dusty isn't built to race Dottie (Teri Hatcher) is always fixing Dusty up. Soon after that with the help of the local veteran hero, Skipper (Stacy Keach) Dusty is on his way to victory.

I had mixed thoughts on this film mostly on its predictable underdog story and how this film is targeted to a very young audience. I'm not trying to say the movie is bad but not a good movie either. Let's say the movie is positively solid. There is an aspect of this film that is pretty irresistible though I don't know what. But other negative thing I should add is that the beginning is rushed and the character development is kinda bad. But on the good side I was surprised with how this film actually went especially with the rock music in the film's opening (nice touch.) Speaking of music the main theme is great besides the fact it really reminds me of John Powell's Test Flight from How to Trail Your Dragon.

Overall the film did well and is well deserving of its score.
