Review of Planes (2013) by Liam C — 15 Nov 2013
'They're making this and not Incredibles 2?'- is what I said when I first heard about this and originally listed it as 'not interested' However, my family wanted to watch this and I thought, why not?
'Planes' is a pretty poor offering and it looks like they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for ideas now. While the story is just more of the same being-not-what-everyone-tells-me-I-am-and-defying-the-rules-and-ultimately-winning-in-a-sea-of-improbability generic summer stuff that we love it to be, its just the very idea of a 'Planes' film is just poor. Its perfectly undemanding entertainment thats for sure but the idea of making a 'Cars' spinoff which has divided audiences and critics anyway seems risky, and it clearly didn't work. The film felt offensive too, the characters were nothing more then stereotypes of the countries that they represented. Other then that, it did keep me somewhat entertained for an hour and a half, just because its something to do for an afternoon, but its just so generic! One of the characters has an eerily similar backstory to a character from 'Cars' I mean, were they even trying?! And there is already a sequel planned, of course. Its hardly a bad film, its just one with a generic and tired formula, for a family day out, you could do worse.
