Review of Planes (2013) by Keith R — 03 Jan 2014
Why does this film have such a LOW rating? This film is not -- and never was -- intended to a motion picture spectacular. Like any Disney animated feature film, it is meant to be a story -- that's all.
Like the other two entries in "the world of CARS," the story is primarily a personal odyssey. In CARS, the protagonist started out as jerk and had a life experience that transformed him. In this film, the story is an American Dream story.
The film includes a reference to the Sylvester Stallone film ROCKY. Like ROCKY, this film is about a "little guy" who dreams of being more than he is. The protagonist here, enters an around the world air competition.
He is viewed by others as "just a tractor with wings," but his drive and determination earns him respect throughout the world and from most (but not all) of his competitors. It also earns him the contempt of the three leaders -- Ripslinger, Ned and Zed.
Ripslinger believes that only planes built for racing should be allowed to participate. This leads to an open contest between them that is watched by the entire world. And ultimately to people throughout the world cheering for Dusty.
A story like this is well worth the time of sitting in a theater or in front of your television.
