Review of Planes (2012) by Bizzenboom S — 07 Nov 2013
The anthropomorphic "World of Cars" is not a world I wish to reside in. So this is about a crop dusting plane named Dusty (Dane Cook) that has aspirations of being a racing plane. As absurd as this sounds, he qualifies for a World Tour and is soon on his way to becoming a racing legend.
The original Cars movie was alright, but it was far and away the weakest Pixar movie... That is, until Cars 2 came out. Planes isn't even Pixar, and it wasn't even supposed to be released theatrically.
It was supposed to get direct-to-video treatment, which explains all too much. Just look at the quality of the voice actors that they got: Dane Cook is a huge step down from Owen Wilson, and the majority of the characters are broad, sometimes racial stereotypes.
It is bland, uninspired and underwritten, and this featured some of the lamest puns I have heard in a long time. You have lines like, "For flying out loud!" or "Dusty la vista"... You can't make this stuff up.
The sole bright spot that kept me from hating this movie is that it is barely 80 minutes without credits, so it doesn't bore you to death with its banality. There are no surprises, you can always tell exactly where it is going, and guess what? It made more than enough money for there to be yet another spinoff, so don't be surprised to see Boats a few years down the line.
