Review of Plan B (2010) by Ronnie C — 21 Jun 2011
An artistic and emotionally evocative yet subtle and relatable piece accentuated by extremely grounded, realistic portrayals. Simple and sparse dialogue is clever with plenty of subtext. Characters saying one thing that seems simple and apropos are sometimes saying something else too; it's not simple but apropos and within comprehension. Here the chemistry of engaging seemingly everyday characters, evocative imagery, sparse and meaningful dialogue and even the languid, purpose driven momentum with scenes lingering a tad long on thoughtful characters take the story to unexpected heights. I wonder that the impatience and wonder induced by pace and images was intended to further the viewer's connection to the same feelings within the characters. That's how it worked on me. The angst of dealing with strange and unexpected feelings is hard to imagine, but the film makes it accessible. The film evokes rather than spoon feeds explanation. I was very satisfied by it. The film offers little to expose the lives the characters lead, perhaps any exposition in that territory would have been distracting, I didn't need it.
It's not the kind of movie, but a sequel exploring the aftermath would be welcomed by me. The film describes itself a bit as a light hearted comedy. Perhaps something was lost in translation, but I would not describe it this way. I found this movie fascinating. It's a new favorite. I hope to see more from the film maker.
