Review of Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) by Lyle R — 14 Nov 2009
It's considered "The Citizen Kane of bad movies". It's actually so bad that it's good. No continuity. Totally disjointed. Childish special effects. A plot that makes no sense. The best footage is stock footage and the acting is more wooden than trees. And yet...and yet it's all of these things that make it such a campy classic.
Rifftrax's version is even funnier, providing hilarious background dialogue, but even on its own this is a movie that has you laughing out loud at how poorly it's made. Poor Ed Wood, he aspired to be a great filmmaker like his hero Orson Welles but lacked the necessary ingredient to pull it off: talent! But in his quest he inadvertently provides us with a funny cult classic.
The only truly sad part about watching this movie is they contain the final on-screen appearance of Bela Lugosi, who was a tired, drug addled shell of the once-great actor he was in his heyday.
