Review of Places in the Heart (1984) by David Z — 08 Jul 2008
Run to this movie. This complicated drama makes allusions to more biblical stories than you can shake a stick at and pays homage to some of the greats in literature, most notably "Les Miserable." The film presents a message that's difficult to articulate - a film about charity in times when being charitable isn't really affordable.
It's about enduring to the end. "Inspirational" films could take notes on their own genre from this stirring film. Malkovich and Field are especially noteable, but Harris (who is always good) and Glover both deliver fantastic performances.
One can sense how deeply personal this story is for writer/director Robert Benton. Thank you for sharing with us.
