Review of PK (2014) by Ayas M — 26 Dec 2014
Rajkumar Hirani's return after the hiatus following 3 idiots is much welcome. PK while not being anywhere as good as 3 idiots, however manages to do things just right.
Seemingly inspired by Mork and Mindy and Paul to some extent, PK follows the trials of an alien who is stranded on our planet after a thief steals the remote of his spaceship. This is as alien as the protagonist of the story goes. Other than that he is shown to be as human as everyone else filled with the wide eyed wonder of a newborn and how his complete lack of knowledge of the complex societal structures that are confounding to any logical person yet make total sense to a human being.
PK manages to put a finger on what is wrong with organized religion and yet manages to do that without becoming controversial and maintains a lighthearted humor over serious themes.
Aamir Khan shines with his comic timing and puts on a phenomenal show carrying the performance in tight spots which would have seemed melodramatic with other actors. He is well complemented by Anushka Sharma's Jaggu who is a heartbroken reporter who takes to the affable alien after listening to his strifes and decides to help him get back home. Sushant Singh Rajput also puts on a good performance in his short role and the cameo of Ranbir Kapoor sweetens the pot.
The script is not anything new or out of the ordinary but the direction of the movie, the screenplay and the performances drive the point home. The movie can at times feel like it is dragging along but is instantly saved by climatic moments.
This movie is definitely fresh and the kind of entertainer to be seen by everyone.
