Review of Pixels (2015) by Jason S — 14 Jul 2016
No one would be denying that Adam Sandler has past his prime - and then some. The man continues to churn out typecast cookie cutter comedies without much variation in theme or humour, despite the dropping attendance and box-office revenue.
Knowing that, Pixels is still far from Sandler at his prime, but there is a smidgen of fun to be had here. The reverence for old-school video games played out as an alien invasion film is amusing; the jokes may not be mined for all they are worth, and many are relegated right into Sandler's cliché wheelhouse, but a lean running time and the "play it safe" for the kids attitude keeps things rolling quite nicely. Some thrifty but nifty effects just add charm to a film that quite rightly shouldn't have any, but wins out by the sheer luck of it.
