Review of Pixels (2015) by Jim222001 — 02 Aug 2015
Chris Colubus' 1492 Pictures teams up with Adam Sandler's Happy Madison to give us Pixels. A film about 80's video game nerds who team up to save mankind from an alien attack with video game characters as weapons.
Despite Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter) directing; Pixels still feels like a Happy Madison film. Since the jokes are mostly aimed at grown-ups. A pretty talented actress is wasted as Sandler's love interest and you have Kevin James as the President of the United States....While we also have to buy Adam Sandler as a smart nerd.
Still; 18% good reviews is mostly due to critics ready with their pitch forks and a spot on their Worst of the Year list. Since this is a Sandler film after all. I think that's harsh though since Pixels is one of Sandler's better films.
I admit the plot was thin but the movie has it's fun and funny moments. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) doesn't do his best work yet he still steals the show. He plays a gamer who rivaled Sandler's Sam Brenner as a kid. One of his demands for his help is a romantic rendezvous with Martha Stewart and Serena Williams.
