Review of Pixels (2015) by Austin P — 07 Mar 2016
This movie was actually much better than I thought it would be. While certainly not as original as Wreck-It Ralph, it was still more enjoyable than the last few Happy Madison films. It's sad that the critics only focused on Sandler's performance and didn't pay any attention to the incredible special effects (talk about missing the forest for the trees).
He just did one funny voice but it was sort of appropriate for the situation, so I'll let it slide. I felt the only thing that reeked of Happy Madison was the Nick Swardson cameo. Much like Employee of the Month, the supporting cast really steals the show.
Josh Gad is irresistible as Ludlow and Peter Dinklage looks like he has the most fun. As I previously mentioned, the CGI effects were truly incredible, especially in 3-D! One small critique I have is the scene when Michelle Monaghan's son is abducted is just a wee bit of overacting.
In short, I thought this was more than an Adam Sandler movie and gamers should definitely check it out! I'm kind of hoping for a sequel with characters from '90s games such as Sonic and Street Fighter but I know that's not going to happen.
