Review of Pixels (2015) by Screen F — 15 Oct 2015
"This movie is offensive to Gamers". "A kid's move for anyone over 30".
It's a movie about video games from the late 70'2 and early 80's. Were you expecting Oscar material? Hello.....Lets not go on the fact that while most of the reviewers are screaming how horrible this movie is, they are all standing in line for the latest Jaws remake (Jurassic World) or another comic book movie. Let's face it Hollywood is either out of ideas or the average movie goer cannot comprehend a story that is not fed to them verbally or visually.
I know many people were upset that gamers were portrayed as the worst nerd stereotypes from 1984, but when Adam Sandler is starring, would you expect anything else. The script is dry, and the idea of Video Gamers from the late 70's early 80's rising up to save the world from the evil aliens is worthy of SyFy recognition (and yes I mean the Cable channel with all its Sharknado goodness).
As far as the actors themselves, this quite clearly an Adam Sandler project (as if the HappyMaddison Productions wasn't a clue). There is some humor, and some inappropriate humor as well. Which is to be expected given the star, and his track record of teenage boy never grew up movies. Paul Blart is typical, loud and overbearing and gets to slam on politicians and the government. Peter Dinklage struggled on delivering his role for most of the film (in fact his best performance in the film was at the end when he looked up in the Lincoln Bedroom (still gives me shivers though). Josh Gad, when he is not screaming, is kind of annoying, when he is screaming, well..... context is everything.
If you sit back and just enjoy the film (get out of your own head for a while) you will see that actually it is not half bad and if you want to spend about 90 minutes doing nothing, this is a not a bad way to do it.
