Review of Pitch Perfect 3 (2017) by Mitchell Y — 22 Dec 2017
So first off I have to say I enjoyed the film. It had its moments and was worth the money. However, as previously said, I found a few things ruined it.
Camera Work.
My first issue with the movie was the camera work. The camera was all over the place to the point where it could have given me motion sickness. For example, during every signing scene, the camera angel is either unnaturally rotating round the cast or changing camera angel every 5 seconds to the point of annoyance. This poor camera work really pulled me out of the movie and put a damper on my viewing experience.
Pointless Scenes.
Secondly, there were a few encounters with two characters who were creating a documentary throughout the film. I found all these scenes unfunny and they had 0 impact on the story. Not to mention that the male one of the two made numerous sexist comments which were less of jokes and more of rude statements. I understand that its meant to be a joke but it doesn't come across as funny.
Inappropriate Jokes.
Finally, there is no clear target audience, despite being a 12A in the UK. Many jokes seem to be aimed at the younger audience, there were multiple inappropriate jokes that I wouldn't consider appropriate for children. If these jokes were wrapped in innocents like in cartoons, then it would be okay. However, these jokes include direct references to genitals, sex and inappropriate language. Even with all this in mind, there were some scenes which did tickle me.
In conclusion, despite its flaws, the movie was and is worth the watch but I would not recommend bring your younger children since it does contain some adult content and inappropriate references.
Is it worth the watch?
Despite the points I previously raised, I would not tell you not to watch the film. Honestly its not a bad film but there were a few things they could have done to improve the entertainment value. Although, as previously stated, I would not recommend taking young children to see this film. The inappropriate jokes and language (multiple mentions to genitalia and swear words like S**t) make this film less appropriate for the recommended age (12 years) and more appropriate for 16 year olds and older.
With everything in mind, I personally would not recommend watching it in the cinema as its not an amazing movie and "the cinema experience" doesn't add to the viewing experience like it does to horror movies. I would however say its worth buying the DVD since its not a bad movie.
