Review of Pitch Perfect 3 (2017) by Miranda Z — 01 Apr 2018
This movie just felt incredibly unnecessary. I couldn't really say it better than RT - "increasingly unnecessary trilogy (hello, Hobbit)". I mean, there's literally no good reason for the first song in 'Pitch Perfect 3' to NOT be a remix! This is barely a 'Pitch Perfect' movie despite all its attempts at self-deprecation. Newsflash, being aware doesn't excuse being shoddy. When even the soundtrack can't save the film (like it did for 'Pitch Perfect 2'), you know something is up.
The plot of 'PP3' kind of reflects how I felt about 'PP2' (and how I feel about most new casts), in that I don't like the original cast being replaced. This is also a good thematic backdrop for Beca moving on, since we've always known that she was the most talented one. Speaking of, I'm glad Beca and Jesse broke up! Injecting some reality into the franchise and all.
For all the potential fun to be had with 'Pitch Perfect', however, 'PP3' is just a complete mess. "What the fuck is happening?" is an appropriate question to ask in ANY scene, such as the Aca-Mentary or the weird back-and-forth between Beca and Theo. The plot, if you can call it that, is just a really bizarre mix of genre-defying tropes.
Ugh. I'm glad I watched this on the plane, not the cinema. Let's end this with a positive note, though - Beca's hair and ending performance is bomb. There's a LOT more fanservice in this film but hey, the Bellas did look amazing!
