Review of Pitch Perfect (2012) by Morton B — 09 May 2015

Try as hard as you can to find a character that's not white, skinny, and hot who doesn't have a one-dimensional role and you won't find it. Such specific exclusion tells me this is anything but a coincidence.

The Asian girls? One is a total b*tch 'reverse racist' who only hangs out with other tech-geek Koreans. The other is an outright freak who ate her twin in the womb, never speaks above a whisper, and does snow angels in pools of vomit. Each of these characters fits into an already established category of Asian characters Hollywood is willing to use (see Sixteen Candle's Long Duck Dong.).

"Oh but the black girl is complex because she's gay and that's diverse!" Not really. She's not just matter-of-fact gay, she's in your face gay, refusing to stop a sexual advance when asked. Convenient to just get both gay people and black people out of the way with just one character. Fat Amy's name is literally Fat Amy, and although she had some funny moments, all of them either directly or indirectly involved her fatness. I laughed when she was shown hanging out with a bunch of super hot guys in her pool, but the reason it was funny was because guys that hot don't go for girls that fat. When she took of her blouse at the end of one of her performances, it's funny because she's ungraceful. So no - she's not complex.

I'll admit that Hollywood has developed a masterful formula for keeping butts in seats, because I was amused during the movie - it was fun. But geez what a piece of trite, (garishly autotuned,) racist garbage this movie was.
