Review of Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) by Thomas R — 05 Aug 2015
Terribly derivative even by its own standards. It gives one the distinct feel that the writers, producers and director didn't really have a solid grasp on what exactly made the first one so watchable (even if it was ridiculous). Instead of endeavoring to understand that, they more or less just cut-and-paste the first installments plot, then superficially warped and expanded some aspects. Standard Hollywood.
The humor is occasionally excellent and surprising in its unique tone, but the good parts are really overshadowed by the lame reliance on dumb gross-out gags. The musical numbers are a bit ho-hum. The whole thing would have benefited from a drastic change of setting and plot. Then again, its dubious whether there should have been a sequel at all. Prequel maybe?
