Review of Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) by Tyler R — 31 Mar 2016
Just as fluffy and innocent as the first film, Pitch Perfect 2 continues this "franchise" on a path of earnestness and sweetness. The film picks up with the Bellas as they try to regain their title back along with their dignity.
They wisely avoid a copy and paste job in the sequel, which is a relief, since that's how a lot of comedy sequels go. That goofy, somewhat dirty, earnest charm is back, but not quite as effective as before.
I say this because there are some scenes where the charm doesn't feel earned, such as the campfire segment. It follows a lazy montage that basically skips over the problems the girls are having and it feels too rushed.
Acting wise, everyone is just as good as they were before, and the new additions have solid chemistry. The musical numbers are still pretty impressive, and it's hard not to tap your foot along to their performances.
Overall, this is a sequel that falters a bit, but it's still pretty good.
