Review of Pitch Black (2000) by Alexis W — 10 Mar 2010
Written in the style of the first Alien ( in no way other than the character introduction and the style the first half of the script is written in am I comparing the two), the film spends the first hour introducing characters and building up relationships between them before the initial threat arises.
This makes the characters either likable or not; static and flat characters basically. This makes it easy to see who matters to whom and it makes it easy to feel the tragedy when certain characters are killed as well as certain character changes.
The second half of the film is somewhat fast paced but is definitely not quick enough, with no major thrills or even a small bearable amount of gore. However the creature effects are pretty cool as is the way Riddick sees the world around him.
The performances of Keith David, Rahda Mitchell, and Cole Hauser were very good and surprisingly enough Vin Diesel did a fantastic job in his portrayal of Riddick who was on paper a very, very stagnant flat character with only one character change.
Each actor became their character which brought this movie to life. It is definitely no masterpiece but it is no 55% movie which is why I gave it such a high review hoping to bring it up; it is a 65% movie, enough to be enjoyable not enough to be memorable.
