Review of Pitch Black (2000) by Jeffrey P — 26 Jun 2011
Yet another "Alien" clone where a crew crash-lands on a faraway planet and have to deal with nastiness. This time, the creatures have acute photophobia - they blister upon contact with light. Fortunately, one of the crew members is badass convict Riddick (Vin Diesel), who had his eyes surgically altered in order to deal with solitary confinement. So there you go.
Not only is the idea rather familiar, it takes at least thirty minutes of rummaging through the detritus of the abandoned installation to get to it. The production values are reasonably high (the overall design looks like it may have inspired "Firefly"), but none of the characters are particularly compelling, so it's all pretty dull.
