Review of Pitch Black (2000) by Sam C — 10 Sep 2013
Pitch Black is a film that is riddled with Sci-Fi/horror clichés and it may not be the greatest Sci-Fi film out there, but, that doesn't stop it from being a very enjoyable film that is for the most part original.
If you plan on seeing this movie than go into it expecting a fun time with some decent writing, great direction, some good effects, and some fantastic performances. The writing here isn't the greatest but it manages to tell an interesting story and gives us a very memorable character.
Pitch Black's story had it's issues but for the most part I found it to be very interesting and took me on a fun ride. The story given is a mix between Sci-Fi, horror, and thriller and it is all handled well by the film's writers and the film's director, David Twohy.
I just found the whole concept of the film to be intriguing and I was extremely happy when I saw that the writers and the director handled it the right way. In this film you are also given one of the most bad-ass characters out there, Richard B.
Riddick. Riddick is just a fantastic character, he is a total bad-ass that kicks so much ass and can even see in the dark. All of Riddick's dialogue is just magnificent and suites the character perfectly.
As for the rest of the characters they're fine, all of them are as formulaic as it gets but I still found them to be interesting, only one of them got on my nerves. David Twohy handled this film in the right way and added a very unique style to this film.
He helped create some intense sequences and some awesome action sequences along with adding a unique look to the film with the lighting. For the early 2000s the effects were decent and they managed for the film.
For the most part the acting is very good, especially from one Vin Diesel. Pitch Black was the film that launched Vin Diesel as an action star, this was before The Fast and The Furious franchise. Vin Diesel is fantastic in this role because he makes the character of Riddick come to life, he is such a bad-ass in this movie with so many one-liners.
The supporting cast is fairly decent which includes Cole Hauser and Radha Mitchel. In the end Pitch Black is a fun Sci-Fi thriller that I would recommending checking out if you have not already and make sure you watch it in the dark.
