Review of Pitch Black (2000) by Marysue M — 30 Jan 2011
Pitch Black is one of my favorite movies. I didn't see it in the theatre, and only saw it after Chronicles of Riddick was set to come out (was made aware of it's existence at that point.).
Pitch Black is frightening the first time seeing it. The monster raptor things are horrific. It's not TOO scary though. It's not a slasher/gore film, it's sci-fi/horror.
NvRiddick is a full anti-hero, well acted by Vin Diesel, his best role IMO. This was his movie breakout, everything after is not "as good" IMO but relies heavily on the existence of Pitch Black. That's how I view it. Pitch Black is his Ace in the hole.
I do like him in Chronicles of Riddick, The Pacifier, XXX, and Fast & Furious. He's different, easy yet uneasy. Interesting ...
Hadha Mitchell's performance is the other half of Pitch Black. As the ship is plummeting through the atomosphere of the planet the filmography is spot on, it never gets old for me to see that sequence again and again. She is also an anti-hero, or rather is an anti-heroine who becomes more.
Cole Hauser gets what he deserves, the despicable guy he plays so well.
I have Pitch Black on DVD. I also have it on UMD (for PSP) and have gotten that twice, lost a multible umd holder case full of UMD's once (ouch!) only have one UMD, but two Pitch Black UMD cases. When I find this on Blu-ray, I'll get that too.
