Yeah its a little derivative and formulaic like the tomatometer says but as far as I'm concerned it is a camp monster movie of the highest order. I mean if syfy would can all the shitty monster movies they have in the works and pool resources for one like this maybe they would be redeemed enough for us to let them go back to being scifi.
Definitely worth the watch.
