Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Stephen Z — 12 Aug 2014
Using some of that good, old Disney magic, director Gore Verbinski brings to life the famous amusement ride in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl". By bringing together all of the tropes of pirate myth and throwing in some science fiction, "Pirates" creates a vast world full of colorful characters, that is sure to please both adults and children alike. Along with an intriguing narrative, this film has some spectacular action.
But by far, "Curse of the Black Pearl's" biggest strength is in its lead. Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow brings together all of the clichés of pirates and makes them feel fresh and new. Depp is witty and charismatic, but also proves capable in serious moments too. Even though he is a selfish anti-hero, you can't help but root for Captain Jack. Geoffrey Rush, who plays Barbossa, also adds a lot of depth to his scurvy character. However, both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley deliver bland performances, though it isn't enough to bring the film down.
"Curse of the Black Pearl" brings to life the mythical world of pirates in a way no other film has before. It is a fun, thrilling film, with engaging action and plot, and a delightful blend of comedy too. It is the kind of magical film we've come to expect from Disney. In the words of Captain Sparrow, "Welcome to the Caribbean, love.".
