Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Peter A — 30 Jun 2013
The first Pirates earns its place as one of the great big-budget epics of the early 21st century. Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow naturally overshadows everything, and that's a good thing. Captain Jack is easily one of the most iconic movie franchise characters, up there near Darth Vader.
The plot is quite convoluted, but it should be, because a character like Jack Sparrow is always involved in a complicated series of misadventures. The CGI of the cursed pirates should also be praised.
They look like the natural evolution of Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion creatures in old adventure movies. Pirates also features a well-balanced mix of action, adventure, comedy, drama and romance, with a mix of good and villainous characters and a meta wink at the cliches of Hollywood-style good guys and bad guys.
