Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Addie A — 26 May 2017
It's crazy that this movie came out 14 years ago! I was a young dude the first time I saw this and I'll say the movie still holds up this many years later. Featuring some great action and a pretty solid (albeit simple) plot the film has some pacing issues later on in its later half, but hey I didn't say it was perfect.
The movie for anyone that's been living under a rock and hasn't seen it follows a cursed ship called the Black Pearl captained by Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). The crew long ago stole gold and became cursed.
They become immortal, but not in that good immortal way. Kinda that zombie in the moonlight kinda way. Anywho the crews been looking for many years for the last piece of gold to return, so that the curse can be lifted.
We then follow a young man named Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) a blacksmith that was brought in by the Swann family. Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is the governors daughter and the two have always been close.
One day Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) shows up which prompts a series of actions that lead the crew of the Pearl to the island where Elizabeth, Jack and Will are currently inhibiting. Things go nuts and soon enough Elizabeth has been captured by Barbossa and the pirates and it's up to a Will to reluctantly team up with Jack to get her back! There's more to it involving a subplot with Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) who is the official man trying to woo Elizabeth, but it's typical stuff.
As I said earlier the second half has a few scenes that I felt were just kinda inserted in there. The "love" between Elizabeth and Will is kinda weak in this one. It vastly improves in the next films, but this one seems like the Disney execs thought they needed a love interest for Elizabeth and a meaning for Will to do what he does.
it works, but it like I said it seems a little rushed at times. Overall, it's a fun pirate film that does a pretty good job for being based on a theme park ride!
