A Disney theme-park ride to film feature, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is carried by the success of Johnny Depp, whose remarkable performance as Jack Sparrow earned him Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations and a SAG Award win.
If it weren't for Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean would be an unbearably long and complex for a movie based solely on a Disney attraction. The movie is dull and complicated, moves too slowly, is often too loud, and is disappointing considering the talent of the cast.
Pirates' greatest achievement is its special effects, make-up, and scenery, all which make the pirate life a possible reality. Depp + set design = 3 stars. The rest of this blimey movie should be thrown overboard.
