Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) by Daniel S — 14 Feb 2013
Personally, I never understood the hate for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. It was a decent finish to the trilogy and had some amazing set-pieces. Any film that includes a sword battle in the middle of a whirlpool, between a pirate and a tentacle faced squid man no less, earns my respect.
I love visuals like that. None of that visual wit appears in the entirety of this fourth entry. Director Rob Marshall doesn't seem to know what to do with this material. He neither makes it funny nor exciting enough to please its fan base.
He decides to make the film darker and eschew the lighthearted tone of the previous three, and while that sounds like a fresh idea on paper, it's a disaster on the screen. Johnny Deep seems to be going through the motions as well.
The only element of the film that doesn't complete suck is Ian McShane as the nefarious Blackbeard. He doesn't deserve to be stuck in this dog of a film.
