Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Dave R — 23 Jun 2017
The key word in the title here is "dead." This franchise is long since dead. This is probably the worst movie of the year.
The original Pirates was creative, fun, and showed off Depp's talent for creating a character. Unfortunately, as the series went on, what he could milk out of that character grew thin. Honestly, they could have hired an inexpensive look-alike to perform the role: Depp just doesn't have anything left.
Worse than Depp's phoned in, abysmal performance is the story itself. There is nothing new or even interesting here. Like Depp's performance, it's just the same old re-hash of what we've seen before.
What makes the movie even worse is that it seriously pales in comparison with the competition. From a storytelling perspective, films like Wonder Woman make this look all the worse. Compare this with what Marvel has done with their expanded Universe, and the Pirates franchise looks like something made by some rich high school kids.
Disney needs to be done with the concept with this terrible entry. Give it 30 years, and then reboot it with a new actor who can bring something different to the role.
