Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Ramses N — 27 Jul 2017
Despite it having a lot of plotholes, I still enjoyed it. most people are disliking it for lack of energy in Johnny Depps preformance (compared what it used to be), plotholes and unnecessary characters. They seem to bring those flaws up and let the positives of the movie sink under.
I'm not trying to base my rating on comparison to other, better movies (cause it is definitely not the best movie), but rather on my expectations and how well did it match with them.
I came out happy, because it was exactly what I wanted to see from a finale of otherwise rusty franchise. Before seeing it, my hopes were brought down by the previous installment "on stranger tides" (cause I honestly dislike that one a lot) this one however showed me exactly why I love the franchise so much: great villains, humor, creative action scenes and characters. You probably noticed how I said "great villains" as first example, because villain was one of the best things about this movie. He felt different than other villains, mostly because the brilliant atmosphere he created. Every scene he was in had the atmosphere and feel what screamed "death" to me. That's what he was, and that's what he felt like. Humor was nostalgic as well and even when it didn't make me laugh I had nostalgic chills crawling over. Action scenes were exactly what they always have been: creative. It was interesting and quite thrilling seeing them fight while jumping from cannon to camnon. I knew that that's exactly what I wanted to see and that's what I got. Climax was great as well. Tough not any suprises, it still got some tears out of me when Hector Barbossa died.
Characters were fine. They were cliche, but fitting for the story, so I didn't have much reason to be mad. Of course there was Jack Sparrow, who did pretty good at playing jack Sparrow. I said "playing" cause it felt like Johnny Depp is playing Jack who tries to play himself. It missed energy, sure, but definitely not the feel. Jack felt Jack and I can deal with it.
In the end, I find it to be great way to end the franchise. There were things that they could've done better, but it didn't disappoint and ended it like it should've been ended.
