Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Brendan N — 21 Sep 2017
The series had been quite good but has fallen from the critical heights of the first film. The issue with long running franchises is the studios reliance on special effects and a lack of character focus.
The film is no different but seems to close of a lot of the stories that are left from the other films, you have the sense the series could end here. The lack of character development isn't the biggest issue here, the story isn't all that interesting, the villain that are cinematic aren't menacing.
I was hoping the series could course correct and it does by eliminating the convoluted storylines that hurt the last film. Johnny Depp just doesn't have the presence he had in the first 3 films and diminishing quality of the films caused this to flop, much like the latest Tranforners.
A new and young cast can't save this film franchise and it's a shame, a good film can't overcome boredom. 23-09-2017.
