Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Dimitri B — 27 Jan 2018
As Jack Sparrow's eyeliner gets thicker, the plots to these films become thinner. Pirates V, like the previous installments, is entertaining enough to watch until the climax, however do not provide more than a simple plot that asks a lot from your suspension of disbelief.
Like a lot. From the heist to perilously jumping between wet canons, Jack Sparrow is obviously the main character. Not even Javier Bardem's suberb acting could outshine the many issues with Pirates V and an actor of such a caliber should not subjected to such a bland script and the awkward tokenizing of his Spanish.
However, one tantalizing aspect that endures in this franchise is that of its historical time period. It touches on a very interesting period of history and utilizes fairly accurate (albeit sanitized) settings that ground the series' historical fiction within the real world.
Although Disney will never allow any association with the the ugly parts of that time period's history like I would want to see, I am realizing that this is the only aspect that keeps these films enjoyable.
Overall, Pirates V rendered as expected at this point, not surpassing nor dipping below the set expectation for it at this point in the franchises run. Although entertaining in an escapist manner, an excellent villain, and a tantalizing, but ultimately unfulfilling historical setting, this film is squarely mediocre as expected.
