Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Jacob W — 09 Jun 2017
While certainly not as good as the first installation in the series, 'Dead Men' is considerably better than the last two films in the series (for whatever that's worth...). After the 'Curse of the Black Pearl,' Depp's Jack Sparrow was a beloved, unique and memorable character: a funny and fresh anti-hero who perfectly blended his considerable skills and wits with a good bit of luck. Since that first film, he's come off as more and more of a broken record, trying ever more desperately to make people laugh at the same jokes told in a new way. This movie still has quite a bit of that, but they were at least a bit more creative in the delivery than in the last few attempts. They also cut down on some of the cheese (though there was still more than most people would wish for) and threw out most of the convoluted double-crossing-the double-crosser-who-double-crossed-you-for-double-crossing-them nonsense that started piling up in 'At World's End.'.
It wasn't a great movie at all, but having such low expectations due to the misery of the last couple 'Pirate' films, I was surprised to find this one "Watchable.".
