Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Stephen Y — 06 Jun 2017
The 5th installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise certainly has entertaining value. But one cannot help but feel the writers lost track of what made this franchise so successful in the first place.
Yes Johnny Depp was right in the middle of the spotlight throughout the entire movie and he delivered another solid outing as Jack Sparrow. Other than that, the epic sword duels, the love-hate relationships between Sparrow and Barbosa, between Sparrow and Swan, Jack's heroism behind that goofy outside, etc.
were all non-existent. Perhaps the franchise has got too big, the stories too far-fetched, and the villains too strong. With that being said, the nostalgic factor for this franchise is so strong that I almost certainly will rush to the theater when the next installment comes out, and there is much hope for that as it seems like the creators have finally decided to bring back Bloom and Knightley.
