Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Robbyp — 31 May 2017
A truly terrible film from beginning to end with so many plot-holes and contradictions to the franchise's history that it'll make you wonder if the writer's had seen any of the previous film beforehand. Johnny Depp has finally lost the character of Jack Sparrow, overdoing him at every turn and lending nothing to the story except poorly done comedic relief. Never has Jack Sparrow been so useless, so overly drunk and devoid of any cleverness. The humor picks at all the extremely low-hanging fruit. Even the atmosphere throughout is off, the inability to create tension as obvious as Carina's contrite lineage.
At one point, a shark literally jumps over a boat (an inversion of "jumping the shark" geddit? har har) as if the filmmakers were winking at the moviegoers. They were saying "we know how bad of a movie we've made, but we've still got your money.".
Unfortunately, this is true. And I paid full price.
