Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Sam G — 29 May 2017
Over 20 years have passed in the Pirates world and yet Jack Sparrow looks the same. Is that what I got out of this film? Yes.
There are some good parts, some jokes are funny, Javier Bardem is very good, a decent enough origin to Sparrow which doesn't go on to long and is a nice look to how he became who he was.
The film wasn't as needlessly complex with dozens of subplots and backstabbing as the previous entries, and Sparrow is reined in a little. The story is straight forward enough, but it takes a long time to actually get to the quest, a lot of setup. One subplot of the British after Sparrow is superfluous to the story.
After this, it does feel like the franchise has lost the wind from its sails and though it is not a bad film, it feels tired and shallow.
