Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Arti P — 29 May 2017
As a fan of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films (even the fourth one), I have to say that I was disappointed with this latest instalment as it doesn't feel like a POTC film. However, despite this, it is still an entertaining film. Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are more interested in creating a comedy than a compelling adventure story. There are a lot of sequences throughout the film that verge on being a parody. The directors try too hard in trying to get laughs from the audience. What I liked about the first films was that the humour did make an appearance every now and again, mainly from Johnny Depp's performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, however, the films focused more on its narrative and the adventurous sequences.
There are a lot of things to like about 'Dead Man Tell No Tales' including the new characters. Javier Bardem is best known for his villainous roles, including Silva in the 2012 James Bond film 'Skyfall' and his Oscar-winning performance as Anton in the 2007 film, 'No Country For Old Men' so it's understandable why he was chosen for the role as Salazar. He's an improvement on Ian McShane's Captain Blackbeard from the previous film, 'On Stranger Tides' as he's poses a bigger threat to Jack. Both Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites are great as the two love interests, Carina and Henry. The two share a lot of romantic chemistry.
It's not a bad film but to those who enjoyed the first three films, you'll be disappointed.
