Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by Bob M — 27 May 2017
The curse of Will Turner and the love between Will and Elizabeth is at the heart of the first three Pirates movies. It is the major driving force for much of the original trilogy, and it grounded the craziness with something familiar. On Stranger Tides showed that Jack Sparrow isn't enough for this franchise, and Dead Men Tell No Tales only cements that viewpoint. Jack isn't a character; he's a force of nature that affects those around him, which is what makes Depp's performance great to watch. But without a strong supporting cast, Jack is just a buffoon. Gone is the intelligence that Jack had shown. In its place is a caricature of an Oscar-nominated performance.
What makes this movie somewhat enjoyable to watch is Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. He seems to be the only one to know what movie he's in, and it's too bad that the rest of the cast is as bland as a stale Jack Sparrow.
