Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) by Peter A — 07 Jul 2013
A worthy sequel in the Pirates franchise in that it doesn't settle for re-hashing what worked in the first movie. Instead, Dead Man's Chest goes further. The CGI work in turning Davy Jones' crew into hybrid man-sea creatures surpasses the effects in Curse of the Black Pearl.
Davy Jones himself, thanks to Bill Nighy, is a great villain. Jack Sparrow is still larger-than-life and fun to watch, and the strained relationship with Will, Elizabeth, Norrington and the Black Pearl crew is compelling.
The plot, though, is overly-complicated as the characters pursue competing interests. There are also bloated, unnecessary sections like the escape from the cannibal island and the drawn-out three-way Jack-Will-Norrington swordfight.
On the other hand, I like how the movie avoids strict good vs. evil notions. Instead, the characters clash due to conflicting motives. It's just too bad the movie opts more for stunts and effects than for character depth.
