Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) by Magnus G — 16 Dec 2014
Dead Man's Chest is the best of the three Pirates of the Caribbean sequels (which isn't really saying much). The film tries to cram in so much story to tell a grand epic that it all becomes convoluted and messy as a film.
So much goes on in the film that it ends up being confusing and you wish it would calm down and tell a more down to earth story like the first one did. The actors all do decent to good jobs though some of them do get too much focus which makes them tiresome to watch.
The film starts out really slow with too many pointless action scenes and set pieces but does get more exciting in the final act which ends on a cliffhanger. The visuals and much of the action scenes do make up for the slow padded out length and there's still some of the same humour that made the first film enjoyable.
It tries to be like Lord of the Rings and just doesn't have the substance and grandiosity to pull it off but it's not the huge misfire it could've ended up being.
