Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) by Jacob B — 11 Jun 2016
Dead Man's Chest may not be as irresistibly fun as the first film with too many plot points thrown in your face and Jack Sparrow probably shouldn't have been given a script since his improv was what made the character in CotBP.
However, I don't think it's that bad. The visuals are great with some amazing mocap CGI for Davy Jones that I actually was convinced that Nighy was wearing prosthetics of some kind. The humour is still entertaining and I actually don't mind the cannibal island sequence, pointless as it may have been (it's the punchline to a joke from the last movie) and the action is pretty great with one hell of a surprise cameo at the end doing a good job of setting up At World's End.
Should Disney have gone full-on Lord of the Rings by turning the series into an epic trilogy of sorts? Probably not. But I didn't hate Dead Man's Chest and thought it was, once again, much better than a theme park ride-based movie has the right to be.
