The darker tone, the epic run time and the tangled web of crosses, double crosses and triple crosses take away from the series' fun, adventurous spirit. The good guys (pirates, somehow) vs. bad guys (the East India Company) becomes too broad.

The theme of overthrowing the tyranny of corporate greed also gets lost in the mess of schemes and conflicting motives. Still, the characters remain fun to watch. I also enjoyed the bizarre scene of Jack Sparrow lost in Davy Jones' locker.

And amid its flaws, the film does pull off a satisfying ending for a big-budget, swashbuckling action flick.
