Review of Piranha 3DD (2012) by The D — 20 Jun 2012

Piranha 3DD will only appeal to the few who actually enjoyed Piranha 3D a couple of years ago. I'll admit to liking parts of the first one -- it is nearly the standard definition of "guilty pleasure" although by film's end it became "way too much".

The Arizona Spring Break disaster that occured in the first movie is mentioned here as 3DD also takes place in Arizona and some people fear that the awakened, flesh-eating prehistoric beasts could be using an unknown system of underground caves to go from unsuspecting location to unsuspecting location.

3DD is set in an Arizona waterpark that is run by the vulgar and corrupt Chet (David Koechner - Anchorman, Paul, Extract), an uncle to Maddy (Danielle Panabaker - The Crazies, Mr. Brooks, The Ward), the town-good-girl who has returned from college to check-up on the waterpark left to her by her late mother.

Chet has taken every cost-cutting act possible which has guaranteed that piranhas WILL infiltrate his park and make quick work of his paying guests (and clothing-optional guests). Piranha 3DD shoots for too many cheap thrills and it comes out as trash (this film is highly insulting to everyone .

.. and while I tend to appreciate those "equal-opportunity" offenders that is NOT the case here). 3DD is juvenile and raunchy ... disturbingly so at times and I am betting a 14-year old had a hand in writing this).

If Piranha had a slight fixation with human anatomy, this one is obsessed with it and it gets disgusting. ALL of the brainless fun from the first film is gone and is replaced by crazy/foul shenanigans.

David Hasselhoff LUCKILY cameos as a self-obsessed David Hasselhoff who is asked by Chet to open the new waterpark and play an honorary lifeguard -- a film is VERY sad indeed when David Hasselhoff is perhaps the BEST part of a film.

(also sad -- seeing how far Christopher Lloyd and Gary Busey's careers have fallen) This film is brainless ... if only it were more brainless fun like the first one.
