Review of Piranha 3DD (2012) by Martin D — 30 Jun 2012
Total camp, total silliness, total engrossment. This movie may have significant flaws (plot, special effects, over-the-top titillation factor) but if you take it as what it is: goofy pleasure!, it is an enjoyable experience.
That enjoyment is certainly made easier by the short running time - the director obviously knew the plot was tenuous and wisely chose not to extend the story - but there are some grin-inducing moments scattered throughout.
David Hasselhoff clearly relished the opportunity to mock mock himself (an actor who was making fun of making fun of himself, that is) and Ving Rhames chewed his scene thoroughly using all of his gravel voiced seriousness to maximum effect.
The other players are pretty much bit parts, excepting Danielle Panabaker, who sadly played the role a bit too straight. So while Piranha 3DD won't, and shouldn't, win any awards, it is more cleverly and cheekily done than most other disaster movies you will see this year.
