Review of Piranha 3D (2010) by Stuart B — 25 Sep 2011
Let's face it, this was never going to be a movie which would win a whole heap of awards, a remake of a 70s B Movie with a dash of horror, this instead aimed for the jugular as a satire of the genre with a lavish array of gore, explicit graphic nudity, and lots of laughs.
And to an extent it delivered. The cast of has-beens and never-to-be's are typically woeful actors, and the story is awful, but the movie is a LOT of fun, and kept me entertained throughout it's short run time with a bevvy of beauties running half naked through the water before being mauled to shreds by a sea of hungry prehistoric piranhas.
What more can you want?! The effects are typically wonderful one minute, shocking the next, the make-up gruesomely brilliant, while the wooden 'stars' are airbrushed within an inch of their cellulite ridden orange peeled physiques.
And while this isn't up to the standards of Slither or Peter Jackson's Braindead as a standout of the comedy horror genre, it is certainly very entertaining. It's highly predictable, we all know exactly what's coming for the scantily clad numbskulls, we will everyone to be slaughtered in the spot they swim, yet there is something wonderfully appealing about it all.
Kind of brilliantly awful, and that is said in the very best of sentiments.
