Review of Piranha 3D (2010) by Nate A — 15 Nov 2011
I highly expected this to be insanely crap. But with Aja on the helm I had some hope and what I got was just pure insanity at it's finest. He really did grab at the B-movie monster movie and paid an homage to it without it ever feeling like one.
And I don't really mean to put them down but like what Rodriguez and Taraintino have been doing the past few years with their tribute films to sub-genre films come off feeling like that's exactly what they're doing while this doesn't.
Now I have always loved man vs. freak of nature movies especially of the aquatic sense ever since the first Jaws. I even watch the crap ones. I'm talking about you Mega Shark vs. Giant Octupus. We get a plot complete with stupid teenages fullfilling their duties of being stupid so we don't care when they become violent fish food targets.
The gore is insane and down right awesome with the fact that it doesn't always rely on CGI blood. The cast is great. Chrisotpher Lloyd pretty much playing Doc Brown again. Richard Dreyfuss playing tribute to Hooper right down to the song he was singing and the fashion we find his body is similar to how he found a body in Jaws.
That got me all giddy. Ving Rhames is awesome as usual. Badass black man taking on monster fish with a shotgun and an outboard motor was really a highlight of the movie. Jerry O'Connell really surprised me since I don't like him but he stepped right into the shoes of a porn producer quite well.
Which brings me nicely to the boobies. Another thing this movie did right was the skin. It's highly unneccessary and extremely often. Plus it's done by mostly porn stars. Riley Steele, Gianna Michaels, and Ashlynn Brooke.
They set out to make a monster movie filled with insane blood and boobs and it was great. It won't win any prestiges awards but it won me over.
