Review of Piranha 3D (2010) by Baurushan J — 23 Jun 2012

If you're into movies that delivers glorious nudity and, dishes out gore after gore after gore and you love monster movies especially sea monsters since "Jaws", this movie is definitely for you, it sure was for me.

The story starts off with Richard Dreyfuss' character Matt who goes fishing in Lake Victoria and accidentally drops a bottle of beer into a lake which causes the prehistoric fossilized piranhas from a particular prehistoric species to rise and kill him.

Meanwhile a group of sheriffs go scuba dive and find stocks of large piranha eggs and two of them are killed by the piranhas. They take one of the fishes to a marine biologist played by Christopher Lloyd who tells them that this particular species have been extinct for over 2 million years ago.

The sheriffs go to warn the lake which is open for the tourists to bathe in and not listen to what the police are saying which causes a tragically bloody disaster at the lake, only managing to save a few.

One of the sheriffs named Julie Forester played by Elizabeth Shue goes to rescue his oldest son Jake on a sinking boat where he is filming a pornographic movie during the spring break his brother and sister Zane and Laura happens to be on the ship after he tried to abandon during his filming.

Julie's right-hand man Novak played by Adam Scott comes along on the rescue and they blow up the boat after lighting a flare releasing a gas stored in propane tanks. The movie ends with the Forester family, Novak and one other survivor from the boat going off into the sunset when they get a call from the biologist saying the piranhas they were trying to kill were only the babies.

As Novak wonders about the parents, a gian't human-sized piranha leaps out and takes him into the water and the movie ends. This movie only spews us occasional and fun horror but does not go into more serious depth and take itself seriously.

One problem I'd like to point out is the special effects, the CGI for the piranhas is creatively scary but they look so damn fake that it gets distracting and I can't enjoy the scary moments whenever they appear which gets annoying and finally if you watched this film in 3D, you should be even more pissed and hurt with bleeding eyes than I am.

Piranha 3D gets a weak 10/10.
