Review of Pinocchio (2022) by Jluis_001 — 21 Sep 2022
It may seem much more eye-catching and advanced for the new audience that will be introduced to this story with this film, especially considering that Guillermo del Toro's version that will be released on Netflix this December may not be as accessible.
Unfortunately for this release, it faces the same problem that all of Disney's live-action adaptations have faced, and that problem is going up against superior versions, because so far most of them have failed to capture the magic of the animated films, and Pinocchio fails miserably in that regard as well.
I even think Tom Hanks was a poor casting choice to play Geppetto. Admittedly, I'm putting unfair weight on this film, but there being a better version of the same project, I must say that, while the 1940 Disney film may seem dated to new viewers, it's far more effective than this weak remake. This movie means condoning creative laziness, and its release on Disney+ is proof enough of that. And it's also very sad to see how Robert Zemeckis is closing his career.
