Review of Pinocchio (1940) by Ray D — 22 Aug 2009
Disney's working on a huge, fantastical canvas here, and the images are beautiful enough (if, occasionally overpowering) that the story (simple enough in structure so that, after a while, it's groaning under the weight of its set-pieces) manages not to wear out its welcome.
Pinocchio is a bit of a wet blanket when it comes to protagonists, but the world he inhabits is the real star of the film. It doesn't hurt that, as a six year old, I kind of wanted to be Jiminy Cricket when I grew up, if I recall correctly.
