Review of Pinocchio (1940) by Zane U — 29 Dec 2009
Whoa. My young grade-school brain didn't even scratch the surface of this movie. I love it now, but I can't help but imagine that the morality and behavioral lessons that it was trying to disseminate to a young audience likely went unnoticed for the most part.
PINOCCHIO gets dark, making it daring by today's standards, but it's also a bit jarring. It definitely belongs in the upper tier of the Disney catalog (itself an upper tier of the general film catalog), but it's early-age Disney through and through where the visuals seem to contradict the depth of the simple story.
It sounds like a bad thing, but it's enlightening to see such a juxtaposition.
