Review of Pinocchio (1940) by Patricia H — 07 Nov 2010
This is an old classic Disney film that sort of has to grow on you. At least, it did for me. I always saw it as a kid, but never really got it. How can you understand the subtle racial undertones, or little idiosyncratic foul words put in there by the distributors? In a way the whole kids turning into Donkeys thing was a play on how Disney may have felt towards kid, or even critics.
The critics being the kids, and the fat guy with the red jacket being Disney calling everybody a "Jackass." But aside from the dark "humor" of this film, I thought it was rather good.
The animation has great shading and movement. They've all got faces that make them come to life. And the songs are fun and catchy, causing the characters the jump around humorously to the beat. I give huge credit to this film.
For starting Disney off on a good note, and creating that classic Disney theme song, " When you wish upon a star." This is a movie you tend to forget through other films like the Lion King or Beauty and the Beast, but rest assure it's up there in novelty like the rest of them.
